The Ride to Conquer Cancer

Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer
I would like to dedicate my ride in memory of Jeannie Lane, a dear friend and colleague, who lost her long, hard fought battle with bladder cancer in November 2004. To learn more about Jeannie please visit the Jeannie Lane Foundation Website: http://www.jeannielanefoundation.org
My name is Julie King. I am a first grade teacher at Westridge Elementary School in Frankfort, KY. On September 26-27, 2009 I will be taking part in The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Norton Cancer Institute. This cycling journey will take me 150 miles from Louisville to Lexington and back. All donations collected will be used to:
*Fund research that works toward a cure and offers our community access to the most advanced therapies.
*Ensure that prevention programs are in place to help reduce the risk of cancer for present and future generations.
*Provide cancer screenings to those who otherwise could not afford them.
*Fund the most up-to-date treatment options such as the da Vinci robotic surgical system and radiation and infusion therapies.
*Provide the emotional care and educational support patients and their families need in coping with and recovering from cancer.
It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

First Graders Can Help Too!
|
Our Teacher, Miss King, Needs Your Help!
This school year my first graders have been learning about the importance of helping others. In December, we collected stuffed animals to send Ecuador. Here are their thoughts on helping others: Nick- Helping others is good to do. James-Sick people need help. It feels good to help. Savannah- I think it’s fun to help other people. It makes them feel happy. It makes me feel happy too. Kelsey- I feel happy when I help others. Jordan- It’s important to help others from getting sick. Sam- I like to help other people to make them feel good. Kade- Jesus wants us to help others. It makes me feel good when I help somebody. Vanessa- It’s good to help others. Jacob- I called the doctor when my aunt was sick. It made me feel better. I like to help people. Autumn- Helping people is very, very, very nice. I help my friends spell words. I feel happy when I help. Anna- It’s nice to help people because if they are hurt you need to help them. If someone falls, you should help them up. Dallas- Our class collected stuffed animals for sick children in Ecuador. I felt proud. Hunter- If you help someone, they might help you back. When you help someone, they are nice to you. Emily- It’s important to help people because some people can get sick and you can give them medicine. I like to help. Adrian-When our class collected stuffed animals for the kids in Ecuador I felt happy. I think the kids felt happy too. Alexys- To help others you need to be nice and respectful. I like helping others because it makes me really happy. Rehma- If you help others they will help you. Katie- If people don’t feel well, then you can help them. If you don’t help, people might die of cancer.

My Thoughts and Reflections on the Ride to Conquer Cancer 2009
I'm not really sure what to say or how to say it. It's hard to describe and put into words how I feel today other than exhausted, sore, tired, elated, proud, accomplished. It was truly the experience of a lifetime. I'll give you my thoughts and reflections below.
Optional Bike Drop Off Friday, September 25th, 2009: My friend April went with me to drop off my bike Friday evening and pick up my registration packet (wrist band, cycling jersey, bike tag). WOW! It was so neat seeing all those bikes and the excitement on people's faces in anticipation of the ride. I was incredibly nervous but incredibly excited too.
Saturday, September 26th, 2009 Arrival: I got up around 4:15 am. Sleep did not come to me easily the night before so I was very tired, but got up easily. My sister, Kelly, came to pick me up at 5:15 am. As we were driving to Louisville, the rain was pouring down. Talk about being nervous! I had never ridden in the rain and was NOT excited about the prospect of riding in it this weekend. There was no way I was going to back out though. I had signed up and committed, so I was riding rain or shine. When we got to Louisville, it had miraculously stopped raining. WOW! It was high energy environment- music, bicycles everywhere, food, lots of smiling faces, food. When we got to the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park we dropped off my luggage. One the crew members told me I had to change into my ride jersey for day 1. I was wearing a jersey I had embroidered with In memory of Jeannie Lane The Ride to Conquer Cancer 2009. There were other riders w/out their ride jerseys, but it was ok. Around 7:45 am I tried to encourage my sister to go ahead and leave so she could make her spin class at The Prevention Park YMCA. She wanted to stay to see me off. Very sweet, Kelly. (I appreciate you so much!) At 7:45 stretching began. At 8:00 opening ceremonies began. They talked about the ride and the work the Norton Cancer Institute is doing on Cancer Research- very inspiring, uplifting, and touching. The ride started around 8:30 with the speaker saying- Ready, set, ride! I was nervous, but once I started pedaling, I was fine.
The Course- Saturday, September 26th: The weather held out for us the entire day. I think THE BIG GUY upstairs was watching out for us protecting us on our ride. It was a little misty some parts of the ride and it was overcast all day, but it was not bad at all. It was actually very comfortable. Temperature wise it was great. I was never too hot or too cold. The route was great though challenging- lots of challenging climbs. There were steep descents too. I typically love going downhill (the only time I feel fast), but road was wet and I was afraid I would wipe out. The worst part of the ride on Saturday was riding on Leestown road. It was very busy- UK tailgating. This was the only time during the ride I felt unsafe. The cars were absolutely nuts. I felt pretty good the majority of the day. There was one point around the 50 mile mark that all I wanted to do was to pull over to the side of the road and just sit down for a few minutes. I didn't and after about 20 minutes I felt much better. When I rode into Masterson Station Park, I was a mess- muddy and wet from water spraying off the tires. My bike needs a good cleaning. What beautiful countryside we have in our magnificent state.
The Course- Sunday, September 27, 2009: Whoa! I thought Saturday was challenging until today. Not only were there LOTS of hills, there were also strong headwinds the entire day. The last 7 miles were probably the toughest, not in terms of hills, but in terms of being sore, exhausted, and just plain old ready to be done. I was really scared about riding over Tyrone Bridge in Anderson Count. I was told that it was very intimidating. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There was a long, winding, uphill right off the bridge. I kind of wanted to get off and push but I knew I would be disappointed in myself if I did. Persistence was got me up the hills on this ride. I actually passed about 15 people who had gotten off their bikes to push uphill.
Camp at Masterson Station Park: I have to say camping was not as bad as I thought it would be. Was in comfortable? Absolutely not. Was it terrible? Absolutely not! There were little blue tents lined up in a field. They were so close together, they were almost touching. The tents were so close you could hear everyone snoring. It was kind of comical. I had a "tent mate". I hate to say this, but I cannot for the life of me remember her name. She was a very sweet lady. She was a crew member, not a rider. She volunteered because of the care she received from the Norton Cancer Institute when diagnosed with colon cancer 3 years ago. She had a neat story to share. The food at camp was very good. It was amazing how much food there was- all I could possibly want and definitely more than I needed. The entertainment was good too. There was a live band playing- The Rigbys. They sang all the Beatle's songs. They were amazing!!!!! I feel They had free massages too. I had to wait in line for about 30 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. The port-a-potties were not that bead either. I used more port-a-potties this weekend than I ever have before. The showers were awesome too. They had these showers on these big rig trucks. It honestly felt like the best shower I had ever taken in my life. They water was hot and the water pressure was fantastic. I fell asleep Saturday evening around 9:45 pm. I feel asleep easily, but woke up a little after 4:00 am. I think the rain woke me up and all the snoring that was happening. I laid in my sleeping bag until around 5:00 am, then got up and brushed my teeth and walked around the campsite for awhile. Around 6:00 I got my cycling gear on then ate breakfast. After breakfast, I got my bike, tried to clean it off the best I could, then had the guys from Scheller's bicycle shop to check the air pressure in my tires. They were low. I was ready to head out around 7:00 am, but they wouldn't open the route until it got a bit lighter outside. The Route was incredibly well marked. I never at one time thought I would get lost. You would have to be pretty clueless to get lost. There were signs posted along the route telling us to ride single file, to watch out for loose gravel, slow down- steep downhill, etc.
The Crew of Volunteers: The Ride to Conquer Cancer was one of the most organized events I have ever taken part in. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! I'm not even sure what to say about the volunteers- from checking people in, transporting luggage, medical personnel, massage therapists, setting up and breaking down tents, passing out food and drinks at hydration stations along the route, offering words of encouragement, etc. YOU GUYS ROCK!!! What an amazing group of people. They made everyone feel so welcome and appreciated.
People Along the Route Cheering Us On: WOW! I kind of felt like a celebrity. It was so neat and empowering to witness the people along the route rooting for us and cheering us on. Thanks Berry and Elaine Lane- I saw you out the corner of my eyes as I was passing by in Shelbyville. Thanks to the Albers family. I made my day when I saw you guys along the path cheering me on and the other riders. WOW!
The Food: The food was great. There was no lack of food. (I think I probably gained at least 5 lbs.) I do, however, feel like I've been "carb overloaded". Thanks to following businesses for keeping us well-fed: Calistoga artisan sandwiches, Morrison Healthcare Food Services, Qdoba, & Olive Garden. Thanks to all the people who manned the pit stops. There was what seemed to be an endless supply of food- fruits, chips, granola bars, trail mix, water, Gatorade, etc.

Incredible journey belies all the energy and effort you've put into your blog and your training both physically and emotionally. As I read the part where you describe the beginning of your journey -- that AHA moment where you changed the course of your entire life by getting up off the sofa and going out for a walk -- I was deeply moved. What courage it took to do it; what conviction you have to continue with it; what drive you have to surpass goals you've set for yourself. You are amazing on so many levels. That smile on your face just radiates straight from your heart.
Congratulations again on a wonderful ride for one of the most worthy causes. My mother's eldest sister detected breast cancer in her 70s. She had it removed, yet cancer came back in her spine and went to her brain. It was one of the most difficult things I've witnessed -- how something unseen can cause so much pain to somone so undeserving of that pain. I participate in the Relay for Life each year to honor my aunt and her struggle. Perhaps this will offer a new outlet for me to demonstrate all that she meant to me and how her will to fight lives on in me.
Thanks for sharing the blog link. I enjoyed reading it. Thanks also for the kind words, but any good instructor and personal trainer will tell you that it is the will of the individual to overcome that sets that person apart. You have that will.

"Rain, rain, go away, come again some other day..."
WOW! I have been exhausted this week. The rain is killing me. It has been relentless. I have not been able to go out and ride at all. My legs should be good and rested for this weekend's ride.
I can't believe the ride is in 2 days. For the longest time, I've said- it's 6 months away, 5 months away, 4 months away, etc. It's always been in the future. Now it's here.
I asked Mr. Berry Lane to make some business cards that I could pass out at the ride with information about the Jeannie Lane Foundation. I got them in the mail today. They say: The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to continue the work and to honor the memory of Franklin County kindergarten teacher, Jeannie Lane, who lost her battle with cancer in 2004. http://www.jeannielanefoundation.org
Our FCEA (Franklin Co. Education Association ) representative for our building came up to me at school and said that FCEA was going to make a donation to the Jeannie Lane Foundation in honor of my ride. WOW, wow, wow! Too cool and too exciting.

Today was Early Release Day at school. I'm not a fan of early release days. It kind of throws me and my kiddos off. As a staff, we looked at working writing folders across the grade levels. It was nice to see how the students have grown from k-garten through the 5th grade. It's kind of amazing.
Instead of exercising, I got a pedicure and fake nails put on. If could keep my fingers out of my mouth I wouldn't need the fake nails. Biting my nails is just about the worse habit I have. I remember when I was an exchange students in Venezuela 100 years ago, my venezuelan mother would always say, "Julia- no come las unas". She would then tell me she was going to put dog sh** on them if I didn't stop. I'm not sure why that memory just came back to me.
Though it was probably good for me to take a break from exercising, I'm feeling like a fatty for not doing any type of exercise. Oh well...
As I was typing this blog, the following song was playing in the background:
There's A Place In
Your Heart
And I Know That It Is Love
And This Place Could
Be Much
Brighter Than Tomorrow
And If You Really Try
You'll Find There's No Need
To Cry
In This Place You'll Feel
There's No Hurt Or Sorrow
There Are Ways
To Get There
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Little Space
Make A Better Place...
Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

I am sooooooo tired today. I did not sleep well at all last night. I probably only got about 3 hours of restful, peaceful sleep. I am going to try to sign off in a few minutes and try to go to sleep.
I got to spin class a little early this evening and got my bike all set up. When my sister, Kelly, got to class all the bikes were taken. I decided to give her my bike and go for a walk. My friend, Michelle, decided to go for a walk with me and gave her bike to another girl who showed up and didn't have a bike. I let this girl borrow my indoor cycling shoes because the bike she was going to ride had clipless pedals. After spinning class I went to the weekly 8-week weight loss challenge. We walked up and down the state parking garage for 30 minutes. Some people chose to run. I decided to try to give it rest the remainder of the week and do nothing more than walk and possibly some ab/core work. My legs have been incredibly sore since boot camp on Saturday morning. They hurt when I have to bend to pick something up off the floor. They should be good to by Saturday if I scale back my training the rest of the week.
My trainer, Julie of Julie's Boot Camp for You, said to need to carb load this week. She said I wouldn't have to weigh in this week. I'm thinking that by carb load she means that I should go to Dairy Queen Friday evening and get a Georgia Mud Fudge Blizzard (a small of course). :-) Julie- if you are reading this, please confirm.

Berry posted something on your Wall and wrote:
"Julie, thanks so much for all you are doing. We're going to be out there
cheering you on as you help move us a little closer to a future without cancer.
You certainly do great honor to Jeannie's memory."
Meg posted something on your Wall and wrote:

next weekend. Sending you good thoughts!"
Meg made a comment about your link:
"Congrats! I will be thinking about you next weekend!!!"
Julie,
I can't tell you how proud I am of you and how inspirational you are to me. I know how hard you have worked over the last eight years and LOOK how many people you've touched in your efforts to raise all that money and in all the workouts you've done. I know that Jeannie Lane is up there smiling at you and feeling so proud. When the going gets tough on your journey, just breathe and believe how far you have come and know how many people are rooting for you. You will be in my thoughts and prayers next weekend. GOSH, You're gonna do just great! Just think how proud of yourself you'll be for all that you've accomplished!! What a journey! Your are truly blessed and have touched so many people. Love you and lots of hugs and I'll be saying my prayers for you, Kiddo. Good Luck and just keep pedaling. Youo're AWESOME! Hugs, Marcia Walker
Wow! That is a great page! I loved reading your progress, thoughts and reflections! I am so proud of you and in awe of your accomplishments and your continued success. I can only hope that I can be ready to join you on this ride next year!! Stay strong!!
See you either Monday or Tuesday afternoon.
Thanks,
Michelle

I was not able to get outside and ride. It rained on and off all day long. YUCK, though I'm sure Mother Earth was very happy.
I met my friends April and Michelle at the Prevention Park YMCA. April gave us a great workout. We did 30 minutes on the spin bikes, then 4 laps of lunges, 30 more minutes on the spin bike followed by about 10 minutes of abs. GREAT workout, April! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

My sister, Kelly, has to be at school by 7:30 AM tomorrow morning for some training on how to use the phone system at her school. (She teaches high school math at FCHS.) So, her two little boys, my wonderful nephews, are spending the night with me tonight. They go to Westridge with me this year. I am tickeled to have them at school with me this year. They are really enjoying their new school and their teachers. It will be interesting to see how hard it is to get them up and moving in the morning. They will have to eat breakfast at school. I don't have "kid friendly" food in my house. I guess they could have a protein shake if they wanted one. :o)
I am typing my blog, the following song came on--- great song, great lyrics:
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day when nobody died
When nobody died...

It's Sunday morning. I awoke to the sound of thunder and rain. I was going to go on a bike ride this morning at 9:00. I don't think it will happen this morning. Hopefully later this afternoon it will clear up and I get my ride in. If it doesn't, I may skip my other exercise classes and ride outside next week.
A few things have happened this that week that have really bothered me. (However, I can be too sensitive.) If anything, I try to be helpful and do things, as I'm able to help other people. I found the following quotes with which I will try to live my life:
"To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity." --Douglas Adams
"Honesty is the cornerstone of all success, without which confidence and ability to perform shall cease to exist." --Mary Kay Ash
"A life lived with integrity - even if it lacks the trappings of fame and fortune is a shining star in whose light others may follow in the years to come." --Denis Waitley
The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty." Zig Ziglar
Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what's right. ~Isaac Asimov
Goodness is the only investment that never fails. ~Henry David Thoreau

Over the past several years, I've lost around 100 lbs. There is a whole community people who have helped me. Credit cannot be given to one person or any one program or thing in particular. Though I don't always feel it, I am very fortunate and I'm very thankful for the things I have been given.
I give lots of credit to the following people (in no particular order): Dr. Bell- encouragement. Thanks for not telling me I still weigh too much for my height. Dan Spicer at the Prevention Park YMCA- Thanks for 4.5 have years of group fitness training classes. You got me started with the exercise craze that I' m currently in. Sherry Sebastian- Thanks for the FANTASTIC spin classes- the hardest cardio class I've ever taken. You're an A+ instructor. April Burton- Your "The Works" class is phenomenal. Your spin classes are equally as challenging. The following that you have in your classes is unbelievable. Thanks for listening to me, pushing me, and challenging me. You are a great friend and great person. Michelle Roberts- my friend and workout buddy at the YMCA. You, Michelle, are an inspiration to me and so many people at the YCMA and outside of the YMCA. You have lost your weight the right way- gradually and with a proper diet and exercise. Thank you for listening to me and encouraging me to see the positive. Julie Curtsinger- Julie's boot camp is fantastic. Thought I haven't lost TONS of weight I've seen so many changes in my body since starting boot camp about 12 weeks ago. I feel stronger and more lean (http://www.juliesbootcamp4u.com) Don't lost sight of why you started boot camp. You have skills to help so many people. Last but not least- My Family. My sister Kelly Caldwell and my father, Jim King. You guys are the best! Though I can be a bit obsessive compuslive you have supported me through everything. I love you dearly!
For several years I refused to step on the scales (even at the dr.'s office). There's that whole if I don't know how fat I am then I'm really not as fat as deep down inside I know I am. My weight has a always been an issue for me. Though I was always "husky" as a child, I was also active (b-ball, softball, swimming, playing outside with friends from sunrise to sunset). I started putting on the weight when I started college and was not active. I don't have my exact weight at my biggest, but I know I was around a size 22 in pants.
I have lost and gained weight so many times over the years and I have been on many weight loss journeys. I've been on the weight loss journey that I am now on for about the past 8 years. Boy has it been a rough ride on a rocky road. I remember so clearly the day this journey began. I was living at home with my father and teaching first grade at Collins Lane Elementary. I came home from school like I always did and sat down in front of the t.v. with a Dr. Pepper (not diet) a Suzy Q Snack cake, and probably a bag of chips. As I was sitting on my large rear end, something clicked and I said Oh my God, I can't do this to myself anymore. I'm not sure why, but I got up immediately and put on a big baggy pair of sweatpants, a "humungo" sweatshirt, and tennis shoes.(When you are fat, you think the bigger and baggier your clothes are, the better. WRONG!!!) I walked down the East West Connector to the first stop light. On the way back up, I literally cried because I thought I was going to die and/or have a big fat heart attack. Guess what? I didn't die or have the big fat heart attack. I walked just about every day for a year. I walked when it was raining, I walked in the snow, I walked when it was 100 degrees. I walked, and walked, and walked. I was eventually walking, on good days, for 2-5 hours. When I scaled the walking back, I started taking some step aerobic classes at The Prevention Park YMCA. I eventually started taking Dan's group fitness training classes at the Prevention Park YMCA. I took GFT class for about 4.5 years.
On July 6, 2008, I had abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), a bi-lateral thigh lift, and brachioplasty. (8 hours worth of surgery) About 2 months after my surgery, with the encouragement of my friend, Michelle, I started taking spin classes at the YMCA. For about the first 6 months I hated it...incredibly hard and challenging. I can officially say that I am addicted to spin class. In fact I like spin so much that I decided to buy a road bike. I've had my bike about 2 years now though I've only been riding it, riding it for about a year. Though I am VERY slow, I absolutely love riding outside. Thanks to Troy and the guys at Capital City Cycles. If you are interested in purchasing a bike, check them out. They are fair, honest, and they know their bikes. Check out their site: http://www.capitalcitycyclesweb.com/Home_Page.php I highly recommend them to anyone considering purchasing a bike.
Last January, the YMCA had a team 12-week weight loss challenge. The parent of one of my students, Julie Curtsinger, was our team coach. The 12 weeks were phenomenal. With Julie's encouragement and coaching I dropped a few pounds. Julie really worked with our team on the importance of nourishing our bodies properely and the importance of eating properly. I really got the feeling that she cared and that her heart was in it. When Julie decided to start a boot camp, I decided that it was time or a change. I quit taking GFT classes and started boot camp classes. As part of her boot camp she started an 8-week weight loss challenge. I am in the middle of the 2nd 8-week weight loss challenge now. Though I haven't lost a lot of weight, I have lost inches. I feel stronger and more toned. (I love the whole team/group aspect of your weight loss challenge.)
I am now at a crossroads with my whole exercise routine. I'm not ready to do it on my own, but I also have to do what's affordable for me and is not going to make me go more into debt than I currently am.
I will make no decision until My Ride to Conquer Cancer is over.

Friday: What a long school week. Though I have no plans, I am soooo ready for the weekend. I did not sleep well at all last night. I woke up around 3:30 AM and had a very difficult time going back to sleep. I ended up getting up, taking a shower, writing filling out my food diary for the day and going to school. I was at school by 5:50 AM. The good news, however, is that most of my lessons plans are done. Instead of being at school for 6 hours this weekend, I may be able to finish everthing in 2-3 hours. I did Julie's Boot Camp from 5:00-6:00...as usual, great, hard work-out. (http://www.juliesbootcamp4you.com/)
Saturday morning- I did boot camp from 7:30-8:30 AM. (I actually didn't get there until 7:30. I had to run out to school and get my cell phone because I left it yesterday when I left. After boot camp I walked at Lakeview Park for t he kick off of the YMCA's America's on the Move week. I think I walked/jogged/ran about 2 miles.

This has been a long week for me...not a bad week, just a long week.
I feel I have so much to do at school that I am feeling slightly overwhelmed..not really sure why.
I did Sherry's spin class from 5:15-6:15. I then walked out and around East Frankfort Park with the 8-week challenge group. It was a decent walk. I just didn't feel much like exercising.
As I go back and look at my blog from the past week and a half, I've had several days I haven't really felt like exercising. I feel like I am starting to slip a little. I need to start being able to motivate myself and not depending on others.

I left directly after school today to get my hair cut. I took my nephew, Jack, to get his hair cut too. Right after our haircuts, I went to pick up my bike from Capital City Cycles. I had "the final tune up" before my ride on the September 26 & 27. I didn't make it to April's The Works class or Julie's Boot Camp. I ended up parking at the YMCA and walking about 3 miles. I thought I had a decent pace going. Not a great day for exercising.

Today is my dad's 70th birthday. He looks great for 70. You would never guess his age if you saw him. Happy Birthday, Dad. I love you.
I ate VERY, VERY light during the day so I could have pizza, b-day cake, and ice cream without have a terrible day calorie wise.
I did spin class from 5:15-6:15. Great class, but hard..it was also INCREDIBLY hot in the new cycling studio. Oh well...
Oh, one more thing...I got my VERY first flu shot today. I was very nervous, but I couldn't let my first graders show my up by getting their shot. So, I did. It wasn't as bad as I had built it up to be.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock...I guess the old addage "time flies when you are having fun" holds true. I can't believe it's a mere two weeks until the Ride to Conquer Cancer. It's here ready or not. Honestly, I have worked hard to prepare myself physically. It's the "mental" part that I've struggled with. When I think of the reasons I am taking part in this ride, my attitude and self-confidence improves. I am riding in honor of my dear friend and former colleague- Jeannie Lane who lost her hard fought battle with baldder cancer in November of 2004. Jeannie was one of those teachers who you never heard utter an unkind thing about another human being. She was always willing to help anyone in our building. She was one of those people who would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. Her husband Barry and his new wife Elaine have both donated $100.00 for my ride. How incredibly generous! If you are reading this, please take a minute to visit the Jeannie Lane Foundation webiste. Make a contribution if you are able. (No ammount is too small- $1.00, $25.00, $100.00, $1000.00..whatever you are able and feel in your heart you can give. )http://www.jeannielanefoundation.org/
This weekend was NOT a good weekenkd for exercise. I did not exercise a bit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I have a few guilty feelings about it now, but I think my body needed the rest. Honestly, I thought I was coming down with a sinus infection and bronchitis, but I am feeling better.
Today was an incredilby easy day at school. I only had 11 kids in attendance. I had 10 kiddos out today. Though I missed my students who were out, it was very quiet and peaceful in my classroom. Hopefully, my students will be back healty and happy tomorrow.
Monday, September 14, 2009: After school I was feeling very tired. My energy is not 100%. I had to leave just about with the buses to get to my eye doctor appointment at 3:15. I thought I had gotten away with not going in this year, but they caught their mistake and said they would not give my any more contacts until I had come in. (I have a TERRIBLE habit of wearing my contacts too long and getting corneal ulcers.) Eyes checked out great-- no problems...not a clue that I had been sleeping in my contacts some lately. It is a terrible habit, but I have a hard time getting them in and taking them out. I had a hard time driving with my eyes dilated. YIKES!!! I thought I was going to wreck.
After my eye appoitment, I ran home and grabbed my bicycle. I took it out to Capital City Cycles to get the final tune up before my ride on the 26th and 27th. What a great shop. The guys in it are so nice and helpful. Check out their webiste. http://www.capitalcitycyclesweb.com/

What a sad day of rememberance. I remember sitting the cafeteria of Collins Lane Elementary teaching a reading group when I first heard about the terrorist attacks on the twin towers in NYC. It was amazing how quiet it was at our school the rest of that day. People walked around not knowing what to say or do.
I did not exercise today. I think I have a sinus infection...I don't feel all that great and think I just need to sleep.
My friend Kristy is in town this weekend. We went out to eat this evening t hen came home and watched the first episode of True Blood from season1.

YIKES!!! It's 11:15 PM and I probably have about an hour's worth of work to do before I go to bed. Where does time go?
'
I had a great day at school today. What a wonderful group of first graders that have been placed in class. We are not a perfect class by any means, but a smart, sweet group of kids. I feel very fortunate. I've told them a little bit about my bike ride. They are now all writing stories about their bikes and riding their bikes. One little guy told me he rode his bike 1000 miles this weekend. :) Too cute!
I did spin class from 5:15-6:15 this evening in the new "cycling studio" at the Prevention Park YMCA. New cycling studio= small crowded, hot room. Talk about getting to know the people that are inches away from you. I'm not sure how this is better for spin classes. It was incredibly hot with little air circulation. I'm surprised some people didn't get sick. There is s ceiling fan. There was mention of getting some fans, but there is NO floor space to put them. Oh well...
After spin class I went to my weekly weight loss challenge. We had to run the equivalent of a 5k. (Shhh..don't tell anyone, but I did take a little short cut. ) ;-)
I think I'm going to sign off and go to bed even though my hair is wet.
Going to bed with wet hair = BAD HAIR DAY TOMORROW.
Until tomorrow...

What a day to be off of work. It's been raining all day long. I did, however, get my boot camp class in from 8:00-9:00. About 9:05 it started pouring down rain. The timing couldn't have been better for an outdoor class. It rained before class and after class, but not during class.
Right now, I'm checking e-mail. I'm sooo tired I think I could fall asleep, but I need to run out to school and make sure I have everything ready for for school tomorrow and the rest of the week.
It's hard to believe that my ride is coming up. Hope I'm ready. I guess that ready or not it will be here.
Good News: It's just about 10:00 and I'm ready for bed. Yay! I've been trying to get in bed by 10:00 for the past several weeks. I should feel great tomorrow morning. I am going to red a bit in bed before going to sleep. I'm on book 5 of the True Blood seried by Charlaine Harris.

I've gotten really bad about updating my blog. Lot's to write about, but not enough time. Let's see where the past week has taken me...
Last Saturday, I rode about 17 miles. Sunday I finally got in a 50 mile ride. I actually suprised myself and felt pretty good at the end of it.
Now for this past week..
Monday- I did Julie Curtsinger's boot camp. (http://www.juliesbootcamp4u.com)
Tuesday- I did spin class (5:15-6:15). My 8-week weight loss challenge group worked out with Kentucky State University marching band. WOW, WOW, WOW-- what a talented group they are. I would love to go see them play now. It's amazing how hard they have to work to get themselves ready for performances.
Wednesday- I did April's The Works class. It's always hard. we did half the class outside (worked legs) and the other half of class inside (arms, core). It's ALWAYS hard and I'm ALWAYS sore the next day. (I did get about 20 minutes in on the treadmill before class.)
Thursday- Spin class 5:15-6:15- We spent the majority of class in the sadle- lots of hills and higher tension. FANTASTIC class, Sherry!!!Thursday's challenge was running/jogging/walking up and down hills and stairs around the KSU campus. This was a very difficult class for me. Sometimes I'm on and some days I'm just not. I even got called out a little for not pusing myself and challenging myself. I guess Julie calls it a challenge for a reason.
Friday- Boot Camp 5:00-6:00. AWESOME class!!!!!
Saturday- Boot camp 7:30 AM-8:30 AM. I had a very difficult time getting up to go to boot camp this morning. I was sooooooo incredibly tired and was not feeling it. I was even about 5 minutes late. (I hate to ever be late. I'd rather be 30 minutes early than 3 minutes late.)I did survive and made it through the hour. (We weighed in and I lost weight. I'm not sure how much, because I have "scale phobia" and never look. I tend to get caught up on the number and it causes a great deal of stress. :-)
At about 10:00 I rode outside with my friends April, Debbie, and Chase. We rode 31 miles- GREAT, but challenging ride--- some great hills and lots of "gentle" rolling hills.
Saturday evening was a girl's night out with my friends Julie C., April, and Michelle. We had a great time- went to eat Mexican, then went to The Dragon- first time going there..don't really like bars.
Sunday- I swam 1600 meters at Juniper Hills Pool. Tomorrow evening they are supposed to start draining it. The draining of Juniper Hills pool signifies the end of summer for me. It's always a little sad.
I'm very excited because there's NO SCHOOL tomorrow. It's Labor Day and we have the day off. I will, unfortunately, have to go in and work on lesson plans. I went for about 2 hours this evening and got a little done, but not very much. I am hoping to get a bicycle ride in too.

Tired, tired, so very tired today. The PE teacher at my school has started an afterschool fitness program for the students. It's called GEMS (Getting Enough Movement in Schools). I am helping him with the program. Julie Curtsinger of Julie's Boot Camp 4 You is also helping. Today was the first session. It was kind of fun working out with the students. After the GEMS workout, I did spin class at the YMCA and then did the weekly challenge for the 8-week weight loss group. We worked out with the Kentucky State University Marching band. WOW, WOW, WOW! What a workout. What an incredibly talented group of young people. GO KSU-- YOU ROCK!!! (Thanks Dani for oraganizing this for our team.)

Great day for riding outside! The weather was perfect...not too hot, not too cold. I finally got a 50 mile ride in. There were some nice size hills and some long stretches of flat road. I did not have to get off my bike to push up hill, but I do seem to lose my momentum on the hills. I rode with April, my spin instructor, and my sister, Kelly. They are MUCH faster than I am and where ahead of me just about the whole way, but I did it and stopped maybe twice to get a drink water. I haven't mastered the "skill" pulling my water bottle out of the water holder and putting it back in while I'm riding. I can, but I'm not super steady. ha ha!! :)
About the best thing I accomplished on this ride was gaining the self-confidence the September 150 miler. Though I was a bit tired after the 50, I could have ridden 75. So, I now know that I CAN do it.

Friday: WOW! What a week. I am sooooo tired. I have to get the whole work and exercise thing worked out. I'm up too late and getting up too early. The work week actually did go by fairly quickly. I have a great group of kiddos this year. They like to talk, but they are very sweet. I did boot camp from 5:00-6:00. That was all the exericse I got in today. I should have gone and ran on the treadmill, but just didn't feel like it.
Saturday: I did boot camp from 7:30-8:30 am. I rode outside for 17.5 miles. Tomorrow, I'm planning on a 50 mile ride with my friend April and my sister, Kelly. After the ride today, my legs were killing me. I think I reached true muscle fatigue. In boot camp this morning we did lots of squats and lunges.

During the week I typically set my alarm clock for 5:15 AM and get up around 5:30-5:35. Boy was I surprised when I rolled over and looked at the clock and it was 6:50 AM--- not a great way to start my day. I'm slow moving in the mornings and do not like having to rush. Good news- I did make it school on time, but was a little flustered.
I ran a little over on the treadmill before spin class. I did spin class from 5:15-6:15. I was going to swim laps from 8:00-9:00, but it was raining. Oh well....
This Saturday I'm supposed to do a 50 mile ride. Hope the weather holds.

Monday, August 24: I did boot camp from 5:00-6:00. It was very challenging. My endurance has been the pits lately. I've had the hardest time keeping up. I think the whole working and trying to keep my work outs up has slowed me down.
Tuesday, August 25, 2009: I had a first grade parent informational meeting at school today. I think the parents who came appreciated it. I missed spin class because of my meeting, but I did one of the 8-week weight loss challenges after meeting. It was a power walk up Louisville Hill and down Lafayette Hill. It was good!!! After the challenge I swam 1200 meters at Juniper Hills pool. The water was amazing. It was sooo nice to be in the water. I'm not much of a swimmer, cyclist, or runner, but I think I would like to eventually do a triathalon. That's a goal for the future.
Wednesday: I set my alarm for 5:15 AM every morning. I did not get up until 6:00 this morning. I was in a deep sleep. When I got up and was EXHAUSTED and it continued the rest of the day. I did April's the Works class and had a difficult time doing all the exercises to my full potential. Oh well..hopefully good rest tonight will make a difference.
I am now only a$165.00 away from reaching my goal of raising $2500.00 for my ride! A co-worker walked past me today and whispered, "less than one month..." That caused me a bit of stress.

Thursday: Feeling sleep deprived-- I'm not getting in bed until 12:00 and I'm getting up around 5:30 AM. Today, I did spin class from 5:15-6:15, then hiked up fort hill with my weight loss challenge group. Spin class was one of the best spin classes I've done in awhile. We got off the bikes at one point in the class did some leg work (squats).
Friday: I did boot camp from 5:00-6:00. It was hard, but good.
Saturday: I got up early and did boot camp from 7:30 AM -8:30 AM After book camp I did a 30 mile bike ride otuside. I felt pretty good outside on the bike. I could have probably done a 50 mile ride. I went rode with my sister, Kelly, April, and Chase. I was very tired once I got off the bike.
Sunday: I am not exercising today. I think I need a one day break. I did go to school and work in my classroom a bitr.

I've gotten behind on my "what used to be" daily blog. With the start of school my daily routine is not established. I'm going to be around 12:00 and getting up at 5:30...not enough sleep for this old body.
Exercise wise I'm doing well. Outside bike ride..not so well. My exercise routine this week has been:
*Monday- boot camp 5:00-6:00 (very intense workout- combo of cardio w/ strength training)
*Tuesday- Spin Class 5:15-6:15, Hiking up and around Fort Hill- a little over an hour
*Plans for today (Wednesday) Treadmill for 30-60 minutes, The Works Class 5:15-6:15.
Fundraising for my ride is going well. I just sent in a $100 check this week. I wish it didn't take so long to post. I'd like to begin the online check-in process.
Another late night...
Exercise for today- I ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill. I ran the first mile in a little over 9 minutes. I felt like I was going to die, but I did it. April's The Works Class was very hard...lots of jumping. I hate any kind of movement that involves jumping.
My little group of first graders are too cute...very chatty, but too cute. They just have a lot say. It's a very outgoing group. I'm going to really enjoy this class. (I think I've only been called mommy a couple of times.)

WOW! What a week! The first week of school is always physically exhausting. I think I have a great group this year. They seem very sweet and very smart. I am about as physically exhausted as I've ever been. Hopefully, it will get better as my body adapts to me being on my feet and talking all day long.
We had a school pool party at Juniper Hills Friday evening. It was a WONDERFUL turnout. It was sooo nice to see a lot of k-garten parents in attendance. Our principal, Greg Roush, said he would do ad 1.5 off the diving board if we raised $250.00 for our technology fund. I believe we raised over $450.00. The Westridge Student adore him. They were chanting, "Mr. Roush, Mr. Roush" over and over as he walked to the diving board. Mr. Roush gets the outstanding principal award for our county. I'd say our school has the best one. We are very fortunate.
Today (Saturday) I did boot camp from 7:30-8:30 AM, then did spin class from 9:00-10:15. Both classes were incredibly difficult. In boot camp she made us do "sprints". I was at pass-out point by the time we finished.
I have $165.00 to raise to reach the $2500.00 mark for my ride to conquer cancer. I received a $100.00 in the mail last week. I wish it didn't take so long to post. I'd like to go ahead and do the online early registration. It's frustrating to wait.

I've really gotten behind on my daily blog. The first day of school was this Wednesday. I have 21 first graders in my class right now. I seem to have a pretty good group. Right now we don't have a set schedule. We are stil trying to get to know each other and learn rules and procedures.
I've not done very well with my exercise routine this week. I have to get back on track this weekend. I'm going to have to change my routine with the start of school. I've exercise everyday this week with the exception of Monday, but I've only gotten 1-1.5 hours in.
Last night I did spin class from 5:15-6:15, then walked for about an hour after class.
I recieved a $25.00 donation and a $100.00 donation. I'm now at $1,235.00. (Thanks Mr. Ball and Mrs. Tutt.)

Today was opening day for teachers. I set my alarm for 5:30 AM and got up around 5:45 AM. I was incredibly tired this morning. I was up late working a newsletter for my sister to send home for her high school math students. She had written it on legal size paper. She asked me to type it for her. I used a newsletter template from Microsoft Word. I found some really quotes to put in it. I was pleased with the outcome. (I think Kelly, my sister, was too.)
I did not get a workout in today. :-(

Saturday: I got up and did boot camp from 7:30 AM-8:30 AM. I did not do spin class. I decided I needed to get out to school and work on my classroom. (I do have to admit that I felt a little guilty for only exercising for an hour.)
Sunday: I swam 2000 meters this morning. That's my record so far this summer. (Some of that was just kicking using a kick board.) I rode my bike outside with my sister Kelly and friend, April. Kelly and April are much better cyclists than I. I did fairly well hanging with them unti l had to climb a hill. Every hill we had to climb I got considerably behind. I've learned that I need to work on my hill climbing.

It's not a good sign when you get up at 6:15 AM to drive to swim laps in an outdoor pool and have to turn on your heater because it's you're freezing. I did, however, swim. The water temperature was actually warmer than the air. (swam 1300 meters)
I did boot camp from 5:00-6:00- lots of power moves. I really struggled tonight.

I'm not feeling very motivated right now. I've contemplated going to the YMCA and running on the treadmill or hopping on my bike and going for a ride.
I swam 1600 meters at Juniper Hills Pool this morning. The water was initially very cold, but felt great after the first 100 meters.
I received a $50.00 donation for my ride today. Yay! I've now raised $2160.00- not bad!. (Thanks, Dr. Kenner for you donation today. You are appreciated.)
Reasons I signed up for the Ride to Conquer Cancer (Not in any particular order):
1.) In memory of my friend Jeannie Lane who lost her long, hard fought battle with bladder cancer in November 2004. Check out the Jeannie Lane Foundation:http://www.jeannielanefoundation.org/
2.) I signed up on a whim. I saw a brochure at a dance store in Lexington. Logged on the RTC website and requested information. I got the information in the mail and decided that it would be too hard physically and too hard to raise the money. I tossed the information aside and kind of forgot about it until I received a phone call at school from a RTC staff member. I signed up on the spot.
3.) Family members with cancer- I lost my grandmother to pancreatic cancer several years ago. I have an aunt who is cancer survivor- colon cancer spread to her liver, a cousin currently battling breast cancer.
4.) It's a great cause. It gives me focus. I've been given a lot in my life and this is a great chance to give back.
Julie<------ sleep deprived. It's 11:00 and I'm still up. I had two picnics to go to this evening at two different locations. I rode my bike to both of them. I think I rode a total of 12-13 miles. I need to check my bike computer in the morning. It was an easy ride so I tried to push myself on the speed. I'm able to go faster speeds for longer stretches.
My sister called me about 15 minutes ago and told me that if I wanted to swim I would need to get there by 6:30 AM. I am going to set my alarm, get up, and get my laps in.

11:23 PM- I am exhausted. I was about to sign off and hit the sack, but remembered that I hadn't done my blog. I'm having a hard time keeping my eyes open.
I swam laps at a little after 7:00 AM. What a shock when I dove in the water. It was freezing!!!! Once I swam my first 50, I was ok. (It probably took my a good 10 minutes just standing, staring at the water. I had a late start, so I only swam 1300 meters today.
After swimming I went on a ~20 mile bike ride. (Thanks, Debbie for the great ride.)
I went to school and got the addresses for all my new students. They should be getting a letter in the mail from me on Friday.
I did April's The Works class. I usually walk/jog/run before it, but I just didn't feel like it today. I do need to get a run in sometime tomorrow.

I'm not sure what today will bring me. I woke up to swim laps, but it's too stormy. I think I'll go work in my classroom for a few hours today.
WOW! It rained the entire day. I did, however, get a lot of work done in my classroom. It's still by no ways finished, but I now see a light at the end of the tunnel. It's starting to look like a classroom again. One of my students from last year came and helped me. She was very good help. (Thanks, Emily!)
I had decided that I was going to take a break and not exercise today, but started to feel guilty. I got 30 minutes in on the treadmill. I walked the first 15 at a 4.0--- hard time gettin started then ran/jogged the last 15 between a 6.0-6.5. After the treadmil, I took spin class. As always, great class. We did about 10 minutes of abs after spin.
Overeall, I had a productive day.
Crossing fingers that it doesn't rain tomorrow so I can swim at 7:00 AM. If the weather holds, I'm riding outside wiht a friend at 8:45 AM.

What a morning! I swam 1500 meters at 7:00. (That's 1500 meters of breast stroke. I actually know how to swim breast stroke correctly. I don't breathe correctly on freestyle therefore, I don't swim it.) Anytime that you read that I've swam laps, it's all been breast stroke.)
I did boot camp from 9:00-10:00 AM- lots of lunges. I think I reached true muscle fatigue today.
At did lunch spin class from ~12:05-12:45. We did lots of hills and higher tension for longer stretches.
I did make it to school and worked in my classroom a little. You can't imagine all the little piles I've created in pursuit of being organized. My classroom looks like a tornado has gone through it. WOW! I have a lot of work to do to get ready for my new first graders. It's hard to believe that one week from this coming Wednesday, that I will have students. I am going to have to be super organized to make sure that I get time in on my bike once school starts. I may have to forgo some spin classes and get outside and ride. I have yet to wreck this biking season, so I'm starting to get a bit nervous. (I hope I haven't just jinxed myself.)
8:45 PM- I just got back from a little under 14 miles= bike ride. I rode with (or actually behind) my friend April. I think I rode up the longessssttttt hill I've ever ridden up. I really wanted to get off and push my bike, but would have felt like a loser if I had. More than likely Iwas in a gear that made it more difficult. I just don't have the whole gear/shifting thing down.
(April teaches one of the spin classes I take as well as the works class that I take.) She needs to be riding outside...she's a natural.

I woke up extra early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep so I've been working on some school stuff for the past few hours- getting reading folders ready, printing documents from my comptuer so I can make copies at school, making labels, business cards, etc. I don't have my class list yet, so I can start putting my kiddos' names on anything yet.
This morning I'm swimming laps at 9:00. At 2:00 I am meeting some friends to ride bikes.
Update: I swam 1 mile this morning. I rode my bike ~17.miles. Thanks for the great bike ride, Debbie, Kelly, April, and Michelle. I had a great time.

I can't believe that it's already August. The countdown to the first day of school has begun. I have a lot of work to do to get ready.
This morning I did boot camp from 7:30-8:30. At 9:00 I did the Red Cross Ride for the Red. I rode a total of about 32 miles. Though I'm in decent shape, I have a lot of work to do for the ride to conquer cancer. Sitting on a bicycle seat for that long is very difficult. I was told that I need to be riding (outside) 5-10 hours to very week until my September bike ride. I have been exercising 2-4 hours every day, but I need to get more outdoor bike time in. I'm going to do it even if it kills me.

What a day today! It's 11:30 PM and I'm still up. I am very tired and plan on going to bed as soon as I post this blog.
It's been a great week. I finally surpassed the $2000.00 mark in my fundraising for the ride to conquer cancer. I'm very pleased
This morning I got up around 6:30 and swam laps at Juniper Hills Pool at 7:00 AM. I thought the weather was going to be very cold, but it was actually felt very nice. I did boot camp from 9:00-10:00 AM. It was very challenging (as ususal). We did a lot of inner thigh lunges and squats. I took my bike out the bike shop to have a flat tire fixed, then rode a little with my friend April before my 6:00 PM boot camp class started. The 6:00 class just about killed me. I stopped more than I ever have (this summer). I think I reached full muscle fatigue.
Tomorrow I am getting up and doing boot camp at 7:30 AM, then riding the Red Cross Ride for the Red. It's about a 32 mile ride.
July 6, marked 2 years post-op from my abdominoplasty, bi-lateral thigh lift, and brachioplasty. I received a call from the plastic surgeon's office on Monday saying that Dr. Vasconez wanted me to come in for some post-op pictures. Even though I absolutely hate being photographed, I did it.

I've not done very well lately logging on and keeping my blog updated. I've also done terribly completing my food diary and exercise log. I think I usually get this way when school is getting ready to start.
I went to school today and worked for about 5 hours. I got a lot done, but I still have a lot to do to get it ready for my new kiddos. I going through every cabinet and organizing everything.
Wednesday: I did spin class from 12:05-12:45. I ran on the treadmill for 55 minutes around 4:15. At 5:15 I did April's "The Works" class. (If you are reading th is April, I'm very sore-- good sore!)
Thursday: I ran 3.25 miles on the treadmill before spin class. I did spin class from 5:15-6:15. Then did a challenge hike/walk...another good day for exercise.

I have been at Professional Development the past two days. It's been ok. I'm having a difficult time getting back into school mode. My classroom is a disaster aread. It will look very nice when I'm finished with it though- it will be very organized and inviting.
Monday: I did Boot camp then walked an hour after boot camp with my friend, April.
Tuesday: I ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes before spin class. I did spin class from 5:15-6:15. After spin class, I met my 8-week challenge group at the Cove Spring Park parking lot. We walked/hiked up the old Owenton Road and then through the "wetlands:", It was an AWESOME walk.
My sister, Kelly, signed me up to do a Red Cross ride called Ride for the Red thisd coming Saturday. If I do the whole ride it will be a total of 32 miles. I hope the weather holds out because I'm not too sure about riding in the rain.

Monday and Tuesday I have professional development ALL DAY long. I'm not looking forward to it at all.

I've had a very difficult time exercising the past two days. I have been EXHAUSTED! If there was ever a day I could have slept in, it would have been this morning. I awoke to the sound of thunder and lightenting. I thought my boot camp class would have been canceled, but the thunder stopped and we had class. After boot camp, I did spin class from 9:00-10:15 AM. It was a great class, but it was one of the longest "feeling" classes that I have ever taken. I thought it would never end.
I spent about 5 hours working in my classroom. Though it looks like a bomb went off, I got quite a bit done. I am trying to go through everythign (cabinets, files, book shelves, etc.) and get rid of things that I do not need. I'm starting to get excited about school starting.

This morning I got up bright and early, got ready, and drove to the Parent Teacher Store in Lexington. I needed to get a couple of things so I can start getting my classroom ready. (It's hard to believe the start of school is soooo close.)
When I got home from Lexington I took my niece to get her hair cut. After that I helped my sister start getting her high school math classroom ready.
I did 55 minutes on the EFX before spin class. I then did spin class for about an hour. After spin, I hiked the Cove Spring trails. It was the first time I had been in Cove Spring. It is BEAUTIFUL. The trails were a little slippery from all the rain we had yesterday.
Thanks Julie C., April, Michell, and Sherry for all your encouragment. I couldn't do it w/out your wonderful support. Also, thanks to my sister, Kelly, for riding outside withe and pushing me!!! You are the best.

Lately, I have not been verry good at logging in and updating my blog. Exercise has been good this week (so far).
Monday- I did boot camp from 9-10 Am, Spin 12:05-12:50, boot camp 5--6. .
Tuesday- I walked/ran on the treadmill. I did 3.5 miles. After running, I did spin class. I usually do a challenge on Tuesdays, but did not this evening due to my brother-in-law's b-day.
Wednesday: I'm not sure what I'll do today. I'll either run or do the EFX before The Works Class. I haven't decided yet.
On a good note- I am about 20- 25 lbs. away from my goal weight.

Saturday: Decent day for exercise. I did boot camp from 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and then did spin class from 9:00-10:15. Both classes were very challenging and good. Before boot camp started, we had weigh in and do measurements. I lost 2.5 lbs. I am about 25 lbs. away from my goal weight. I went to a b-day party and took my little nephew, Jack. It was a nice party and Jack had fun.
Fundraising for my ride is going well. I just sent in $150.00. It takes 4-6 weeks for it to post. I'm pleased with my fundraising so far. Some unexpected people have donated. It's nice to know that we have such giving people in our community.

The thought of school starting again has been stressful. I've been really good about staying away this summer. I really think I needed the break. Yesterday, I went to the Parent Teacher Store in Lexington with two my my teaching buddies. We shopped and went out to eat. We had a great time!!!!! I got some really cute stuff at the PT bookstore for my next years' class.
Today I ran/walked two miles on the treadmill before spin class. Spin class was awesome. After spin I did some ab work, then walked downtown in the state parking garage.
I've gotten really off-track with my diet. It's been very hard trying to keep off the weight that I"ve lost. I know that I ever got off track and couldn't get back on, I"d weigh well over 200 lbs. again.

I've really gotten behind on my daily blog. Exercise has been going well. I have been very consistent. I"ve been doing a boot camp class 5 times a week. (twice on Monday and Friday, and Saturday). I've also been taking spin class on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays. Every Wednesday I take The Works Class at the Prevention Park YMCA. As part of the 8-week weight loss challenge that I am a part of, we have a weekly challenge. I've been doing that after spin class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This morning I did boot camp. After boot camp, I took my bike to the bike shop to get the rear tire fixed. The valve broke off/came off when I was having help pumping up the back tire. I was going to ride with my sister and friend Michelle last night before the I had "tire trouble". I am doing spin class in an hour.

As usual, I thought exercise was hard. I did spin class from 12:05-12:45. I walked/jogged/ran 4.5 miles on the treadmill. I then did the works class-- lots of jumping. I feel very akward when I have to make any kind of jumping movement. Class was excellent as usual.

I just got back from Boot Camp at East Frankfort Park. My friend Michelle and I were the only ones in attendance- great work out..lots of lunges and squats...lots of leg work. The abs at the end of class were awesome.
Plans for the rest of the day: Spin class 12:05-12:45, 5:00-6:00 Boot Camp. I'd like to either go on a 20+ bike ride of run on the treadmill.
I did spin clas from 12:05-12:45 and Boot Camp again from 4:00-5:00. I did not walk on the treadmill OR ride my bike outside. I did walk a little over 3 miles outside.

Argghhh..it has been raining all morning. I had planned on swimming laps at Juniper Hils Pool this morningg before the pool opened. Oh, well. I guess I have to go to the YMCA to get my workout in.
I did an hour on the Elliptical Fitness Cross Trainer (EFX). I rode outside for a very short ride. I didn't leave my house until 7:45 PM so I didn't have much time to ride until dark. I rode 10.67 miles- not much, but better than nothing.

YAY! I ran the Buffalo Trace 5k this morning and cut about 3 minutes off my best time. My goal was to complete it without walking and I did it! Though I'm still slow, I'm pleased with my time. I guess the time I"ve been spending on the treadmill has really helped. (Thanks so my all my Boot Camp teammates for being encouraging. It wouldn't have been as much fun without my team.)

I got up early this morning and did boot camp at East Frankfort Park. Great workout- very challenging. The parts she had us jog, I jogged the entire time. I dind't walk!!! That's an accomplishment for me. I've been doing really well running on the treadmill. I've been walking, jogging, running anywhere between 3-6 miles. I'm usually a bit slow to get started, but one I find my "groove" I do ok.
I am going to go on a bike ride sometime today. I'm not sure how far yet- depends on how much time I have.
As part of Julie's 8-week weight loss challenge, she has a weekly challenge. This week's challenge is the Buffalo Trace 5k. I'm not excited about it at all...too much pressure! If I knew I was only going to walk, I'd be fine. However, if I only walked, I'd be very disappointed in myself.

What a busy day! Once again, I was unable to make it to 6:15 AM spin class. I just could not make myself get out of bed. The last 2 months of school, I didn't realize how incredibly sleep deprived I was.
I spent SEVERAL hours organizing my nephews' bedroom. I bought lots of storage containers, made labels for each container. I have to say I'm pleased with how it turned out. (My sister did give me money to buy supplies.) The boys are very proud of their room too. They have been given very specific instructions on how to keep it neat. :)
Exercise for today: I walked, jogged, & ran 3.42 miles on the treadmill before spin class. Spin class was incredibly hard tonight...lots of hills and lots of tension. After spin class I walked with my friends Michelle, April, and Rosie. I believe we walked about 3 miles. For me, it was a fast pace. I also walked with 3 lb. dumbells.

I can't believe that it's already July. Summer vacation is passing too quickly. YIKES!!!!!
Today was a kind of laid back day. I didn't exercise until my 12:05 spin class. As always, it was a great workout. I usually run on the treadmill before my Wednesday evening class- The Works. I didn't today! However, The Works class was GREAT. We had to do 3 sprints (I think). I did not like that part of it at all because I am soooo slow. My short, fat legs dont' want to move that fast. :)

9:00 AM- Well, I didn't make it up to my 6:15 AM spin class...I was just too tired when my alarm sounded.
I ended up having a good exercise day. Before spin class I walked/jogged/ran 5.16 miles on the treadmill--- very slow to get started, but once I found my grove I felt great. After the treadmill I did spin class--- AWESOME class as usual. After spin class I walked up East Main and through the cemetary to Daniel Boone's Grave. Great walk, great group, great fun!

Sunday: I took it easy today. I rode my bike 10.67 miles--- "baby" ride. My sister was out of town so I had no one to ride with. I just rode around neighborhoods. I am still afraid to ride too far out by myself. I'm not sure what I would do if I got a flat. Good thing we have cell phones.
Monday: Tough day- 9:00-10:00 Boot Camp at East Frankfort Park, 12:05-1:45 Spin Class, 5:00-6:00 Boot Camp at East Frankfort Park.
I am EXHAUSTED. I am going to attempt to get up and do spin class at 6:15 AM. If I absolutely don't feel like it when my alarm goes off, I may sleep in a bit. I have to be at my sister's house at ~ 8:00 AM to sit wiht her boys so she can swim laps at Juniper Hills Pool. I am going Jack, her soon to be first grader, read to me. He won't be super happy about it, but he will do it for me. :) He'll also read to John, his big brother. John and Jack's sister Katherine is at 4-H Camp.

What a great way to start my morning- 7:30 am Boot Camp. I've been amazed at what a great turnout Julie Curtsinger has had. The parts that we jogged, I made myself not stop and walk. That's a first during boot camp. By the end of it, I was soaking wet. Right after boot camp, I did spin class from 9:00-10:15. My mileage was not all that great though. I had a very difficult time pushing through the muscle fatigue.
I'm not sure what I will do tomorrow. I may give myself a break...haven't decided yet. I did take about a 2 hour nap this afternoon. I think I've needed the sleep...this past week has been very difficult.
I am, however, excited with the fundraising I'm doing for my ride. I've raised $1760.00. I have at least two donations that have been sent it that haven't posted yet. My father said he is going to make another donation. My sister, Kelly, is also going to make a donation. So, I think I'll get there...

I got up this morning and did boot camp at East Frankfort Park from 9:00-10:00 am. Another great and challenging class. After boot camp, I went to see my nephew's play soccer on their final day of soccer camp. They were too cute and had a blast! The loved the accents of the British soccer players/coaches. After soccer camp, I came home, ate, then sat down for a brief rest. I woke up 3 hours later. I think my body needed the sleep.
I did Boot Camp again from 6:00-7:00. It was very humid, but managable. It's after 11:00 PM and I'm still up, so I'm sure I'll be tired and have a hard time getting started for 7:30 am boot camp.

Wednesday: I walked/jogged/ran 6.21 miles on the treadmill. That's the most of done at one time on the treadill. I felt pretty good after it too. After the treadmill, I did The Works class. (strength training- free weights, bands...) It was challenging. I often wonder if it will ever get easier. As always it was a GREAT class.
I too my nephew to get his new bike this evening. We went to K-Mart, to Wal-Mart , then back to K-Mart to get the one that he thought was perfect for him. We went over to my dad's house and practiced on an old bike. He probaby rode for 45 minutes to an hour. It's amazing how much confidence he has now. Five days ago he was very nervous. I hope he is not too confident. He is our little daredevil. I really see him riding a dirt bike and being very good. He has a lot of natural athletic ability.
Thursday: I got up this morning and did spin class. I was on the bike for 52 minutes. After spin I stayed and did about 15 minutes of abs/core exercises. Good class!

Not a great start to my day..overslept and missed my morning spin class.
I walked/jogged/ran 3.28 miles on the treadmill before spin class this evening. After spin class, I did the weekly challenge. We up and down Dewey Ct. and Rolling Acres. It was a good walk. I now wish I had pushed my self to jog more than I did.
I'm up to $1620.00 in donations. I'm pleased with my progress so far. (I have some money that has been donated that has yet to post on the my personal page. So, I'm actually over the $1620.00 mark.

Great day for exercise!
9:00-10:00 Boot Camp (We had to run a few "sprints" and I actually did it without complaining.)
12:05-12:55 Spin Class- Awesome as usual!
5:00-6:00 Boot Camp again which meant a few more "sprints"
I got to see a little of my niece, Kristen's, softball game. My nephew, John, was in the finals of his little league baseball tournament. His team was in the loser's bracket. The won the first game and had to turn around and play again. The game went into extra innings. The lost top bottom of the 6th inning with 2 outs and and they were up by one. They ended up losing by one run. VERY, VERY, VERY exciting game to watch. (I now have NO fingernails!!!)

I decided to take a break today. I was going to take a long walk today, but decided to hang out with my nephew, Jack. His mom, dad, and big brother and sister went to see Wicked in Indianapolis. I hope he had a good day. I took him to Wal-Mart and we bought him a bicycle helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and cycling gloves. I told him that when he learned to ride without training wheels, I would get him a new bike. He did great riding up and down the street between my dad and me. He was riding without assistance. Now, he just needs to develop some confidence. His balance is GREAT!!!!

Friday: I did boot camp from 9:00-10:00. I walked outside from 4:00-5:30. I had planned on jogging a bit, but didn't. It was so hot and my heart rate was rather high.
Saturday: 7:30-8:30 Boot Camp. 9:00-10:15 Spin Class. Both classes were very good. I'm not sure if I'll do anything else today or not. I may go for a jog/walk. I'll see how I feel and what's going on with my nieces and nephews.
I rode 18.5 miles with my sister, Kelly this evening. It was a great ride...lots of hills of which I consider to be BIG hills. It was challenging, but I felt a great sense of accomoplishment when I was finished. (By the time we got home, it was dark outside. THAT made me a bit nervous.)
Kelly is a much better cyclist than me..I'm still learning the ropes to riding outside. (Now, I could probably take her in a spin class.) She was very patient with me though. I appreciated her riding with me.

*~9:00-9:30 Walked up and down Dewey Ct. and Rolling Acres
*4:00-4:45 EFX (elliptical fitness cross trainer)
*5:15-6:15 Spin Class
*6:45-? Hiked up Fort Hill w/ my 8-week weight loss challenge team. (So much fun!) I did it last Thursday too, but this week I added a backpack w/ 10 lb. weights.
I am tired and ready to go to bed. I'm going to take it a bit easier tomorrow. I'll probably do boot camp from 9:00 AM-10:00 and then get some time in on the treadmill.

It's 4:30 PM. I have boot camp at 6:00 at Westridge. Class was moved from East Frankfort Park to Westridge due to a chance of thunderstorms. I took a little cat nap and am having a hard time waking up. I'm feeling very tired. I ran 3.4 miles on the treadmill. I'm not sure why I didn't get to 3.5. I just kind of quit. My endurance is getting better and feel that I'm getting stronger. I did Julie's lunch spin class. It was about 40-45 minutes long. It was very challenging! It would have been difficult to do more than 45 minutes.
I did boot camp at Westridge this evening. It was very challenging. I feel that everything that I've done lately has been challenging. Maybe, I'm just more of a wimp or I'm pushing myself harder than I ever have.
Goals for tomorrow: spin class 6:15-7:00 AM, spin class 5:15-6:15 PM. I may give myself a day away from the treadmill. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Decent day for exercise- I did Boot Camp from 9:00-10:00 then did Boot Camp again from 5:00-6:00. It's a FANTASTIC workout. It's very challenging.
Plans for Tuesday: Spin class 5:15-6:15. Our 8-week weight loss challenge group has a stair climb challenge this Tuesday. I'm not exactly sure what it entails as I wasn't able to do it last weekend. I need to get some treadmill time in today too. I'll probably try get time in before spin class. My goal is to walk/jog/run 4 miles.
Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Yes! I not only met, but surpassed my goal for the treadmill tonight. I walked/jogged/ran 5.5 miles before spin class. I had hard time getting started, but once did I was on a roll. After the treadmill, I took April's spin class the Prevention Park YCMA. WOW- was it hard!!!!! As part of the 8-week weight loss challenge that I am taking part in, there is a weekly challenge. Tonight it was walking/jogging up and down 6 flights of stairs n a parking garage carrying a weighted backpack. (I carried 10 lbs.) It just about did me in, but I made it!!!! Now, time for rest.
I plan on walking/jogging./running on the treadmill around 8:30 am tomorrow morning. I've set of a personal goal of doing YMCA's annual Black Cat Chase in 30 minutes or under. I'm not sure if that is a reasonable goal for me or not. It at least gives me something to shoot for.

Boy was I tired when my alarm clock sounded at 6:00 AM this . I picked up my friend, MIchelle, at 7:00 and we headed to East Frankfort Park to do Boot Camp. After Boot Camp we did spinning from ~ 9:00-10:15. I headed over to school and spent most of my time talking and not getting the paperwork done that needs to be done; therefore, I'll be at school next week finishing it. At 1:00 I met some people and we rode outside for about 13 miles. (I did about 2.5 miles to warm up before they got there so had a total of 15.5 miles on the bike today. It was a fairly easy ride. It was for the most part very flat with a few rolling hills. Right now, my legs are very fatigued.

Today I participated in the Pro.Active Therapy 5k race. Westridge Elemenary had a school team. (School team winners are based on the number of participants who cross the finish line.) We came in first place and received a check for $250.00. I'm so proud of our faculty, staff, and students who participated. The youngest Westridge student was a pre-schooler. We also had one first grader particpate. Isn't that awesome? (There were several other students who participated and did very well.)
Personally, I was pleased with my time. I'm not fast and will never be , but I did it! Now that school is out, I need to really pick it up and get ready for my 150 miles bike ride!!!! I'm a little overwhelmed when I think about it.

Wednesday- Good workout...3.58 miles on the treadmill before April's awesome "The Works" class-- very tired after.
Thursday- I went to pick up the race packets for our school for the Pro.Active Therapy 5k race. Some of the packets were missing so I had to go back to get them. I ended up missing my spin class, but I think it happened for a reason. I had totally forgotten about my niece's 5th grade graduation from Collins Lane Elementary. I was sooo happy I was able to see her. She was chosen as the outstanding 5th grader out of the entire 5th grade class. I was so proud I cried!!!! :) After the graduation, I went to her dance recital. Happy day!
It's now 11:06 PM and I have to finish report cards. I have to get to school EARLY tomorrow so I can make copies of all them. YIKES! Very little sleep this week...I'm very tired.

WOW! I slept GREAT last night. When my head hit the pillow I was asleep. I don't think I woke up until my alarm sounded. I'm feeling a bit more energetic today than I was yesterday. I think good sleep was all I needed.
Plans for exercise today: spin class 5:15-6:15. As part of Julie Curtsinger's 8-week weight loss challenge, she is going to have us hike up some hill. I am going to do that tonight after spin class. We'll see how I do.
I downloaded another burner for my cd./dvd burner last night. Hopefully I can get the dvd I've made for my students burned. Crossing fingers.
I accomplished my exercise goals for today. I jogged/ran 2.06 miles on the treadmill before spin class. After spin class I did the first challenge of Julie Curtsinger's 8 week weight loss challenge. We hiked up Fort Hill...very fun!
Ohhhhh...I am in the process of burning the end of the year DVD for my students. I have 6 completed right now. Yay!

WOW! What an exhausting day. It wasn't a bad day..just exhausting. My Jeep broke down this weekend. So, I'm having to bum rides. My friend, Kristy, dropped me off at school this morning. My dad picked me up and drove me to East Frankfort Park for boot camp. He then came back and picked me up. I could barely make it through boot camp! All wanted to do was sit down and rest throughout the entire class. The 5k that is coming up this Friday is not looking too promising. We ran a little at boot camp and I was huffing and puffing- terrible!
This weekend I worked several hours on and end of the year DVD for my students. It has pictures I've taken throughtout the school year and music. I am , however, having problems getting it to burn. It goes through the whole burn process then I get an error message stating- error encoding the menu. I am currently trying to reinstall the software. i've updated my burner drivers. I'm not sure what else to do unless I start completely over and try again. The thought of doing that makes me want to cry though!!!! I am determine, however, that my students will go home on Friday with a working dvd. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Today was very productive, but not in terms of exercise. I made my a dvd of pictures and music to give my students as a memory of first grade. I am, however, having a hard time burning it. It has been very frustrating. Once I burn one copy it probably takes about 15-20 minutes to burn each copy. I have a feeling that I am going to have many late nights this week. I did not get any exercise in today.
I am keeping a daily food and exericse diary/log. That seems to help me stay focused and honest with myself.
I am not sure that I am going to make it to my boot camp class on Monday. Something is wrong with my Jeep. It keeps stopping. I am bumming a ride to work tomorrow. I'm not sure about getting to East Frankfort tomorrow for class then getting home.

WOW- not a good night of sleep. I woke up around 4:45 AM. I am going to Julie's Boot Camp this morning from 7:30-8:30. From 9:00-10:30 I am doing spin class at the Prevention Park YMCA. (The first Saturday of the Month we do an hour and a half spin class- Not really looking forward to it this morning.) Hopefully, I'll do ok. I've signed up to do Julie's 8 week weight loss challenge. We have our first meeting today. She said somehting about measurements, body fat, weighing in, and a BEFORE picture. YIKES!!! My blood pressure went up just thinking about it.
It's a little after 10:00 PM. I am sooooo tired and a little sore. The weigh in and measurements were not that bad today. I had gained about 10 lbs. since the the YMCA biggest winner challenge. That has left me a bit depressed. But, now I know where I am and where I want to be. I'm not sure what my goal for exercise is for tomorrow.
My Jeep died on me today. Driving a mile, it stopped 4 times. I'm not sure what I am going to do about getting to work and exercise class next week. My friend Kristy has said that she will take drop me off at school next week if I need her to. I amy see about renting a car for the week, but I have spending money when I'm going to have little to show for it at the end of the week. Oh well...something will work out.

Wednesday- Before The Works class I did 50 minutes on the treadmill. I had a very hard time getting started. I think I walked the first 20 minutes. Once I started jogging, I was fine. It was very hard getting started.
Thursday- I did no form of exercise unless you consider chasing around 6-7 year olds. I went to the all academic banquet this evening.
Friday- Today is Field Day at School. I am wearing my workout clothes today. I plan on participating with the kids. I am going to Julie's boot camp this evening from 5-6.
This has not been a good week for exercise. Arghhhh...I'll pick up this weekend and next week.

Today I am taking my first graders to the Game Farm/Salato Center. After that we are going to Juniper Hills Park for a picnic and to play on the playground. Hopefully it will be a good day.
Today, right after school, I am getting my haircut. My nephew, Jack's, kindergarten celebration is this evening at 6:30. He has to be dropped off at 6:15 in his classroom. I could almost make spin, but I don't want to rush anything. This should be his special night. (He practiced the little songs he is going to sing all weekend. He's very excited. After I get my hair cut, I am going to "fix" his hair. He wants extra "crazy" and "spiky".
I do hope to make it the YMCA to get a little bit of something in. If it's not too late, I may walk with my friend Michelle or ride bikes.

What a long day! Afterschool I scored 4th grade writing portfolios for 3 hours. That put me out doing boot camp. This week is not going to be the best week for exercise. I did, however, make it to the YMCA. I did 4.7 miles on the treadmill. I had a very hard time getting started. I walked at a 4.0-4.5 for the first 26 minutes.

Good weekend for exercise! On Saturday morning I walked, jogged, and ran 3.3 miles on the treadmill. After that I did spin class from 9:00-10:15. Spin is so much harder after doing running. Though I'm still no fan of running, I have to admit it is getting a little easier.
Sunday- I rode my bike to the YMCA. did the 5.03 miles on the treadmill, then rode my bike home. The clipping in and out is getting easier. I'm no longer afraid of clipping in and out-- I haven't wrecked in quite some time. (Hopefully, I haven't jinxed myself.)
This coming week is not going to be the best week for exercise. On Monday, the Westridge staff is scoring 4th grade writing portfolios. Tuesday, I am getting my hair cut right after school. My nephew, Jack's, kindergarten celebration is Tuesday at 6:30. I could make it to spin class, but it would be a rush. After I get my hair cut, I am going to hang out with Jack and fix his hair. He said he wants it extra spiky and extra crazy. He is sooo excited. He practiced his songs all weekend. Thursday, I have the all academic banquet at WHHS.

Woke up early this morning- 1.5 hours before my alarm sounded. I haven't slept very well this week. The countdown to the end of the year is now on- 11 days and counting. Today is end of the year literacy testing for our k-1 students at Westridge. We've worked very hard at school this year and I hope my students' score reflect it.
Plans for exercise today: I had originally planned on going to the YMCA right after school and walking/jogging/running on the treadmill before Julie's Fitness Boot Camp. I'm not sure if I'll get the cardio in today or not.

WOW!! What a long day. I have not been this tired in quite some time. I thought I was going to fall asleep during reading groups today-- physically exhausted. My plans were to get an hour of cardio in before spin class, but that didn't quite work out. Leaving school, I stopped and talked to two people and just didn't get to the YMCA in time. After spin class on Thursdays, I stay after and do Pilates. My niece, Kelsey, came home from UK and cooked dinner. So, I didn't do Pilates. I think my body just needed a slight break. However, spin class was great.
I had the sweetest grandmother come to school and help me paint the kids hands on their shirt for a class shirt we are making. She stayed the majority of the day. I have been very fortunate to have a great group of parents and grandparents this year. I feel blessed.

Monday Morning- I did Julie Curtsinger's Boot Camp from 8:00-9:00-- another great class! We had to run/jog/walk holding our weight load. Though I only had 5 lbs, it was very hard. It's amazing how carrying an extra 5 lbs affects your body. Sure makes me not want to gain any weight back.
Tuesday- Today was a decent day at school. We were off yesterday for Memorial Day. For some reason, anytime we have a Monday off, it makes the rest of the school week seem long. Today, however, passed fairly quickly. I got to the YMCA about an hour before spin class. I got 4.5 miles in on the treadmill. I jogged the first two miles w/out walking, then walked at an incline for about 10 minutes. I then jogged the rest of it.

I just got back from a bike ride with my sister Kelly. We rode about 20 miles. I didn't do as well today. My legs are still tired from yesterday. Kelly said that about 5 miles of the 20 were hills. I'm not sure how hilly the Ride to Conquer Cancer is, but I'm sure this was good practice to get ready. Kelly is a good sport take me with her-- I'm sure I slow her down some.
Tomorrow morning I am doing Julie Curtsinger's Boot Camp. It's at 8:00 am at East Frankfort Park. Anyone reading this should come and check it out. It's a GREAT workout. http://www.juliesbootcamp4you.com

WOW! What a workout today. I am exhausted. I did Julie Curtsinger's boot camp this morning at 7:30 am. (It was incredibly hard, but incredibly good-- great way to start your day) I left right after boot camp and did spin class at the Prevention Park YMCA from 9:00-10:15..another great workout. I am planning on riding my road bike around 5:00..nothing big or long..just trying to get use to my new pedals. I'll see if I can move tomorrow morning.

WOW! What a long week it has been! I am ready for the weekend. We have 3 ducklings in our classroom right now. We hatched them in our classroom incubator. I'm not too keen on hatching ducks. Ducklings depend on their mothers too much..kind of makes me sad. Anyway, they have grown tremendously in the past 5 days. They are very messy and stinky. It's time for them to go the farm. A grandparent of one of my kiddos is going to take them and hand raise them. She will treat them like her babies. That makes me happy! I did ask her if she ate meat before I decided to give them to her. :-)
Today was a good exercise day. Before spin class, I did 4.41. miles on the treadmill. I jogged the majority of it. I felt pretty good while doing it. Spin class was good as usual--very tiring.
After left right after spin class and went to see my niece's 5th grade musical. it was very cute. I can't believe that she will be in middle school together. My last year teaching at Collins Lane, she was in kindergarten. She and her little friend Haley would come to my room and put their milk for snack in my little classroom refrigerator. Ahhh...what memories.

Today was my lazy day. In terms of exercise, I did no nothing. We had a parent meeting from 5:30-6:30. I decided to stay after school and try to straighten some things up. After the meeting I was exhausted. I decided to just stay home and watch the American Idol finale. I have a little bit of guilt, but I'll try to make up for it tomorrow.

I survived our first grade field trip today. We went to see the Lexington Children's production of How I Became a Pirate. It was at Kentucky State University. After the play we went to Juniper Hills Park for a picnic and to play. The park was incredibly crowded. I probably counted my kids and called names 20 + times. My kiddos were very well-behaved though. I was proud of them.
Before spin class I walked between a 5-11% incline between a 3.5-4.0. I just didn't feel like running. I think I got 1.74 miles in..not great, but not bad. After the treadmill, I did April's spin class. As always, it was great!!!!!! I'm very tired and my knees are a bit on the sore side.

I did it! I rode my road bike, with the pedal system (spd pedals I believe-- not really sure), without crashing. I was able to clip in and clip out with little difficulty. I think I only rode about 10.2 miles, but I just wanted to get used to it. I rode to the YMCA and jogged/ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill, then rode back back home. My legs were very sore while on the treadmill-- kind of felt like I had pulled a muscle in the left leg (quads).
In terms in exercise, I'm not sure what tomorrow will bring. I have 3 hours worth of training after school tomorrow. The entire staff has to be trained again on scoring portfolios. We then have to spend 3 more hours one day next week actually scoring them. My plans are to change into my workout clothes right after school so that once the training is over, I can go straight to the YMCA. I may take a day off of the treadmill and do the EFX or the Stairmaster. More to come in tomorrow's blog.

Great workout this morning! I did 2.5 miles on the treadmill this morning before spin class. I walked the first mile, but I did it at a 4.0 on a 5-10% incline. I had a very hard time getting started. I ran/jogged the next 1.5 miles. Spin class was extra hard this morning...lots of speed. Thanks Sherry for the great workout.
Plans for the rest of the day- go to school and do lesson plans. I think my little nephews are going to spend the night with me tonight.

Another very sweet story from school today-
I had a message from a parent of one of my kiddos to call her. So, I called her and she asked if I could stop by her shop on my way home. She works at Nails and More in Frankfort. (Great place to get your hair cut or nails done, but the way.) I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure what she wanted. I walked into her shop and she handed me a great big cup filled with bills and change. Beside it was a money jar with kid writing on it that said something to the effect of- My teacher is riding her bike to help fight cancer. Her son said that he wanted to help me raise money for my bike ride. Again, I was very touched and thought I was going to cry. The little boy never mentioned it to me at school. I was very, very surprised. Kids are the most empathetic little creatures I know. (Thanks, Jordan! You are a great a kid.) I'll let you know how much money was in the cup. Jordan is going to help me count it on Monday. (Every moment is a learning moment.) :)
When I told my kids about my bike ride and what I was doing, I told them that the best way they could help me was by helping me create the web page. We really talked about how you can give and help out without giving money.
Now on to my exercise for the day. I finally got to do Julie's Boot Camp. Yah! It was AWESOME!!! I will probably be sore tomorrow. I went straight from boot camp to Westridge to work at our annyual Spring Fling.
Tomorrow's plans involve spin class and hopfully a little time on the treadmill.

I was very, very tired today. While reading with my little reading group after lunch today I thought I was going to fall asleep. After school it would have been so easy to just go home and skip out on exercise, but I need to get in as much as I can between now and September. So, I did spin class from 5:15-6:15 and the did Pilates from 6:20-7:10. Both classes were very good. (I am sore from The Works class I did yesterday.)
I still have not been brave enough to try out my new clipless pedals that I just had put on my road bike. Perhaps this weekend.

I haven't posted to my blog since Wednesday. Time has gotten away from me.
Monday- I met my old first grade team from Collins Lane at Johnny Carino's. I didn't eat terribly, but I could have eaten better. We didn't finish until 8:00. By the time I got to the YMCA it was ~ 8:30. I got a about 25 minutes in on the treadmill. I dropped my bike off at the bike shop (Capital City Cycles) and got road pedals on..not exactly sure what they are called. It supposed to be a bit easier to clip in. I'm a bit skeptical, but we'll see.
Tuesday- I had a decent workout today. I did the EFX class for about 25 minutes, then did spin class (about 60 minutes). I was very tired by the end of class...legs were killing me. Anyone who has never taken a spin class..I highly reccomend it. You do, however, have to take more than one class before you decide if you like it. I hated when I first started taking it, but now I am addicted. :-) The instructors are phenomenal.
Oh...I did do weights at home this evening. I did over 400 crunches (reverse crunch, regular crunches, scissors kick, etc.)
Today, Wednesday, I plan running on the treadmill before The Works Class (strength training- total body). My goal is to do 4 miles. I'm not sure how fast I can get out of school today. I'll update this page later this evening.
I jog, ran, and walked for 61 minutes before The Works class this evening. It actually felt ok. I started with a 5 minute warm-up (4.0) then went up .5 mph for 1 minute until I reaced a 8.0. I did an 8.0 for 1 minute and then started going down .5 mph for 30 seconds until I got down to a 3.5. I then started walking on a 5-15% incline at on a 3.5.4.0 for 5 minutes. The Works Class was great--- thoughI was very tired. I won't be surprised if my triceps are very sore in the morning.

This afternoon I went on a 20 mile bike ride with my sister. We rode down Devils Hollow Rd. We kind of got "lost" and ended up riding up Stockton Road. I'm not really sure how but we ended up on Bridgeport Road to 60 and then home. It was a lot more "hilly" than I'm used to. It was good training though. My legs are very tired right now.
Last Friday was supposed to be my first class of Julie Curtsinger's Boot Camp. Class got rained out. I won't be able to do her boot camp class again until next Friday. That means that I am going to have to make myself do weights on my own. I have l ittle trouble getting the cardio in, but gettnig the weight/strength training in on my own has been very difficult.

Thanks to everyone who has sent in a donation so far. If you've given me a check, I've sent it to the Norton Cancer Institute. I'm not sure when it will be posted on the website.

What an exhausting week. The change in my schedule at school has not only affected me but it has affected my students as well. Boy are we a routine oriented little class. I left school right at dismissal today to get to the YCMA. I did 45 minutes on the treadmill..didnt' set any distance records, but I did it. I was just feeling it today. I was supposed to do Julie's boot camp but it was canceled due to a thunderstorm. Oh well..I"m going to have to go back to the YMCA and do the weights on my own. I am finding it terribly difficult to push myself with the weights. It's almost 6:00 PM right now and I'm planning on going back to the YCMA between 7:00-7:30.
I got back to the YMCA around 7:45. I did weights for an hour (biceps, triceps, deltoids, gluteus, quadriceps, core). I tried pushing myself, but it's not as fun doing it by yourself.

I'm not sure how my exercise schedule is going to turn out today. I am attending a class from 5:15-6:15 about staying motivated. I typically do Spin class and Pilates from 5:15-7:10 on Thursday evenings.
First thing this morning, one the little girls in my class came up and handed me a plastic baggie. On the inside was a an envelope with a lot of change and some dollar bills. She said she wanted to donate it to my ride. I sent her mother an e-mail to ask about it. She said her the lttle girl held a special "horse race" in their living room and charged admission. She said she was raising money for me to ride on a long bike ride ("like two days") and that the money was to fight cancer. In her e-mail her mother said, "I love her philanthropic spirit!" That was probably one of the most touching things that has happened to me in awhile. Kids are naturally empathetic until someone or something breaks their tender, kind, & caring spirits.
I went the Pro.Active Therapy 5k session Staying Motivated-- lots of great information. The three speakers were GREAT!!! Afterwards, I was feeling very motivated until I went to my dad's house and ate ice cream. :-( I did, however, go to the Y and did about 3.2 miles on the treadmill. My time wasn't all that great, but I did it.

Pretty good day today. I did "The Works Class at the YMCA last night. It's a 60 minute class that focuses on strength training w/ a little cardio built in. It's a great class. The trainer, April, is great- energetic, positive, and very encouraging. Before The Works class I was able to squeeze in 25 minutes on the EFX. I went back to the Y around 8:00 and did 35 minutes on the treadmill.

I rode outside today. We rode about 16 miles. I actually learned a little about shifting gears. (Now if I can just do it on my own.)Thanks to Troy and Pam for riding with us. You are great coaches/teachers.(An extra thanks to Troy for pushing me up that last "BIG" hill...not sure if I could have done it w/out you.) I need to keep plugging away.

Crossing fingers for a nice day today. Tomorrow, I am supposed to go on a training bike ride (Pam Thomas has graciously volunteered to take a group of "newbies" to world of cycling on a ride to teach us to ride our road bikes.) The past two weeks, we've been rained out.
Went to the YMCA this evening. Did about an hour of weight/strength training. (I'm having VERY hard time pushing myself w/ any kind of weight trainng.) I did about 30 minutes of cardio 10 minutes of the treadmill (ran a mile in a little over 9 minutes), 10 minutes on the EFX, and 10 minutes on the stairmaster.

Riding a bike 150 miles over 2 days? A bit overwhelming! Wth hard work, dedication, and a little support, I know I can do it. I am going to start logging the training I am doing to prepare myself for this monumental task.
Today I did a did 30 minutes of core strengthening exercises. I also walked/jogged/ran a little over 5.5 miles on treadmill.
I need to start getting out on my road bike and practicing. I haven't quite mastered the art of clipping out my pedals. I have, however, become very good at wrecking while clipped in. (I am at least no longer afraid of it.)
